Favourite Music Video: Tyler, The Creator- Yonkers

The music video for Yonkers is one of my favourites due largely to it's uniqueness. It ignores many conventions of a music video, while still adhering to a few relevant ones- namely, star image and performance. This rejection of many older rap video conventions, such as the objectification of women, in place of a loosely presented narrative and shocking imagery, matches the attitude towards his music that Tyler and his associates had at the time. The video is iconic and has some relevance to the lyrics- as Tyler swaps between his alter-egos, he changes the way he's facing. The video generated conversation about Tyler, and was a good way to develop his brand. The video's left-field nature is complimented by the strangeness of the instrumental, and the way Tyler delivers his lines in a highly emphasised, at times aggressive nature. The lack of colour echoes the dark tone that the song conveys, as does the imagery used (suicide, upside-down crosses, cockroaches).
